Emily Franklin is a musician from the central coast of CA. She has grown up learning to play guitar and piano from her dad, and always singing with her mom since before she could remember. Her favorites as a child were The Beatles and Fiona Apple (some of her earliest memories are mom singing along to them in the car), the "Harry Potter" soundtrack (singing the entire theme over and over for weeks after seeing the film once),  and - of course - the entire "Grease" soundtrack (which was sang and danced to in its' entirety many times with her cousins in the living room). Emily's dad turned her on to talented singers from Christina Aguilera to Bjork to Aretha Franklin to help train her vocal range and musical diversity early on. As her taste has developed she has grown to love Amy Winehouse, Eva Cassidy, Alanis Morissette, Elton John, Joni Mitchell, Janice Joplin, Frank Sinatra, Carole King, and so many more. She has her boyfriend Zane to thank for turning her onto artists like Ray Charles, Jerry Lee Lewis, and The Devil Makes Three - now some of her all time favorites. Emily loves the soul of blues artists like Etta James, Susan Tedeschi and Ray Charles; the cool passion of jazz musicians like Sarah Vaughan, Bill Evans and Norah Jones. She is inspired by the freedom of artists like The Slits who used their ingenuity and confidence to prove that anyone can get up on stage and share a piece of themselves - no matter how wildly unique or bizarre. She's been touched by the storytelling of artists like Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and Joan Baez as well as the simplistic creativity of pop artists like Sara Bareilles, Ingrid Michaelson and Adele. The electric power of rockers like Heart, Janice Joplin and Prince have started a fire in her soul that will never go out! Emily and I went to Austin this April and recorded with some great folks: Chris Gage (Jerry Jeff Walker), BB Morse (Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard), Matthew Hubbard ( Willie Nelson, Eddie Brickel), Darren Debree (Jerry Goodman) and Kyle Crusham (Dixie Chicks). Worked at Moon House studio and Windy Hill studio. Jay Curlee filmed some of the recording sessions for an upcoming piece about Emily in Austin. Then Emily took off and visited her ancestral land of Austria as a workaway guest, living with a couple different families and co-writting and recording some very inventive music. The Austin Sessions are coming to a record store near you. Emily is now playing all over san luis obispo solo and with her duo Osos Left. They are a great vocal harmony band with drive and overflowing musicality.

"The Devil’s At The Pearly Gates" Short Story by Emily Franklin

The Devil’s At The Pearly Gates

Mama’s eyes are full of tears bigger than apples in late autumn on the trees that stretch over the golden fields of Kentucky where I’ve spent my twelve years of life. The pain in my stomach is takin’ over; lookin’ at Mama is all that keeps me from cryin’ out. It’s been growin’ for two weeks. What started as a needle prick in my belly button, now’s gon’n taken up my whole body and it’s ready to explode out my fingertips. Light glows around Mama like angel’s wings as she…

Reflections on Scool

an improvised unedited rant about learning music in school / tuesday august 29 12:15pm

artwork: Fathullah Luqman B. Yusuff's Dwi Diri (mixed media on canvas, 2007)

I'm so excited for school!
I'm gonna learn so much, become a better singer, play music with others...

But I'm not very good at jazz, and I can't sing very well when I'm in this type of environment.

The pressure is so subtle, it's just community college after all

But who are you if you can't play every mode in every key at every speed?!

Improvising

I am playing the Baywood Ale House tonight and I can't wait - I've been feeling drowned by so many different gigs and playing a certain type of music and this is my chance to let loose and play my originals and what I want to play! I am hoping lots of improvisation will happen tonight. I need it. I have realized something about myself. I don't like playing songs perfectly or planning out a beautiful arrangement.  I like letting loose, forgetting about the plan and letting my hands and my instincts create…

Emily's Update: February, 2017

Update for Email Subscribers, February 2017

"Hey Email Subscribers!

Just updating you on what's going on with my music since it's been a little while! I was working on a play at Cuesta last semester called The Emma Peel Game (written by Phillip Valle) with excellent director bree valle. That was why I may have been a little absent in the music scene. But I still had music in my life...I got to play the electric guitar player in a punk rock band! The play was inspired by the Riot Grrrl movement and…
